The single payer health care program is all but dead. Public options are all but dead as the exceptions are mounting. The insurance companies have ramped up their lobbying spending big time. Every day reports are listed in newspapers and Internet posts showing how many members of Congress are in the pockets of insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, the AMA, the HMO's, and the all other health care industries. So, if any kind of health care reform is to take place, the reforms will be around the edges, and will probably benefit industry not individuals. This is the kind of change we can believe in!

I caught Moyer's last night discussing this topic.
It is looking doomed.
The profiteers have the upper hand.
I agree. Obama's team seems to think single payer is simply unattainable, so they are going to shoot for something they can achieve.
But, any change is going to ruffle feathers...so why not go for the complete overhaul that the system needs instead of a tweek? That would be change that I can believe in.
I see this "change" as applying a bandaid to a hemorrhage. Oh my, oh my, we just HAVE to keep the insurance cos. operating. Hence, Obama's bandaid will solve nothing other than prolong the PROFITS of the health care and pharma industries as more and more Americans "bleed to death" sans proper (or any) insurance (hence decent health care).
Same with the blooming banking industry so in a rush to make a repayment on their TARP "loans" which, as we learn, is so they can reinstate bonuses for those who helped create this mess.
plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.
More and more, we seem to be creating a permanent under class that can die at anytime since there are thousands to replace them. Unfortunately, the former middle class in joining their ranks.
